August 16: God Forgives

*This week’s lesson is based on Mark 2:1-12

Let’s Start!

Let’s Watch!

Let’s Talk!

  • Why was it so crowded around Jesus? People wanted to see him heal people, and they wanted to hear what he had to say.
  • What did the friends do to get the paralyzed man into the house to see Jesus? They cut a hole in the roof and lowered him down!
  • What did Jesus say to the paralyzed man? Hint, look in Mark 2:5.
  • Jesus made a big deal about forgiving sins. The teachers of the law were upset. They tried super hard not to sin AND avoid anyone who might be “dirty” with sin. Jesus didn’t do that. He never sinned, but he wasn’t afraid that others’ sin would make him dirty too.
  • Have you ever sinned and felt shame, or like you wanted to hide it? Have you ever felt like your sin was something dirty or heavy in your heart?
  • By telling the paralyzed man that he was forgiven, Jesus was showing us that the most important reason that He came was so He could forgive our sins, take away our shame and guilt, and make a way for us to have a healthy, loving relationship with God.
  • Sometimes it can be hard for us to talk about our sins. But God is good. He always loves, listens and forgives us when we ask.
  • Read 1 John 1:9 together.

Let’s Memorize!

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.

1 John 1:9

This week, make up a song, rap, or dance to help you to memorize your verse!

Let’s Do!

Cutting a hole in your roof to reenact today’s story may NOT be the best idea. . . so instead, today you’re going to test your strength by pulling your family members around in a blanket!

  • First, find a blanket or a bed sheet that you know your mom is ok with you using (the antique quilt that Great Aunt Ethel sewed may NOT be the best one to use)
  • Then, take turns showing off how strong you are by pulling one family member at a time across the room – using the blanket as a sled! (Just make sure you watch out for corners and hard furniture as you pull!)
  • Note: younger children could pull a stuffed animal instead of a sibling or parent. Or, if you have a winter sled and a hill at your house, you could do some summer sledding like Miss Melanie and Pastor Greg did with their family in today’s video!

Let’s Pray!

Read 1 John 1:9 together. Then take a few minutes to confess your sins to God. Don’t worry about thinking up too many sins, just confess the ones that you know weigh heavy on your heart, or ones that the Holy Spirit helps you to remember.

From the EGC Kids Team: Parents/Guardians, as you do this together, gently allow the Holy Spirit to guide your kids as they confess their sins. Don’t force them or “bring to their memory” sins they should confess. Allow God to do that work in them. This will help them to hear God’s voice and prompting for themselves. If you notice that he/she confesses the same sin situation over and over, remind them that God loves us and forgives us once and for all time.

Then take a few minutes to thank God for sending Jesus and forgiving you. You are free of that weight and sin! God’s forgiveness washes it away and His grace covers the place where it was!

This might be a great time to praise God together. There are some great worship songs on the worship tab to pick from!

Let’s Bless!

May you always run to God’s grace and healing. May you always trust that His grace covers your sins.
